Let’s face it; competing in today’s business world is tough.
There’s a lot of competition out there.
The Kauffman Index even found that in the US, 550,000 people dive head-first into the life of an entrepreneur each month.
If you want to compete in a market that cluttered, you’re gonna need some help. Fortunately, that’s where email automation tools come in.
Email marketing software helps business leaders to connect with and nurture leads in their pipeline. That’s useful in itself, as it improves your chances of not just one-off sales, but repeat customers too.
However, there are also tools like Ontraport and Infusionsoft by Keap that combine email marketing with customer relationship management, landing pages, and more.
These all-in-one tools are what we’re going to be looking at today.
Ontraport vs Infusionsoft
Infusionsoft by Keap (formerly just Infusionsoft) has been on the market since 2001.
The tool recently went through a brand overhaul with the parent company changed its name to “Keap” – leading to just a bit of confusion from some users.
The good news? You’re pretty much going to get the same experience that you were used to with Infusionsoft when using Infusionsoft by Keap. There’s still the same drag-and-drop template builder for your emails, and still plenty of ways to manage your customer segments.
Ontraport, on the other hand, began in 2006 in California.
According to the founder, Landon Ray, he created Ontraport as a “slick solution” to solve the problems in customer relations that he believed businesses were facing each day.
Like Infusionsoft by Keap, Ontraport offers users plenty of handy tools like content management features, lead tracking, email and SMS marketing, workflow automation, and more.
Specifically, Ontraport is for the “small and growing business” that wants to automate their sales and marketing efforts.
Ontraport vs Infusionsoft: Pricing
Money makes the world go around.
You might not make your software decisions in business based entirely on your budget, but you’re probably going to be partially restricted by what you can afford.
Even big corporations have budgets, right?
Infusionsoft by Keap gives you 3 pricing tiers to choose from to help you stick to that budget.
If you want all the fancy features of Infusionsoft, then it’s fair to say you’re gonna need to invest in the “Infusionsoft” package. That means shelling out at least $199 per month.
Alternatively, you can try the “Pro” plan if you’re willing to give up a few features, but the “Grow” Tier isn’t going to give you that all-in-one experience you’re looking for. You need “Pro” for things like sales pipeline automation, segmentation, client management, marketing automation, and more.
Obviously, you need to pay a lot more with Infusionsoft than you would for other tools like Pipedrive CRM ($12.50 per month) or MailerLite ($15 for up to 2,500 subscribers).
The prices for Infusionsoft only “start” at what you see on the website. If you want to manage more than 500 contacts, then you’ll need to pay even more.
Additionally, “new user coaching” is also included as part of the Infusionsoft by Keap package, which means you’ve got yet another fee to worry about.
That’s just a fancy name for the Kickstart fee that used to be mandatory before the rebrand. For the “Pro” package, you’ll need to pay another $499 to get started.
So, how does Ontraport compare?
Well, there’s a free 14-day trial to get you started, so that’s something.
You can also get a full refund up to 30 days after your purchase if you’re not totally happy. That’s a money-back guarantee that you don’t typically get with most email marketing providers.
Ontraport also gives you way more contacts for your money. There are four tiers of pricing to choose from, and even the “Basic” option supports up to 1,000 connections – twice what you get with Infusionsoft by Keap.
You can also access custom pricing with Ontraport if you’re managing contacts at an Enterprise level – this is similar to what you can get from Infusionsoft by Keap.
For the full Ontraport experience, you’ll need the “Pro” plan – which costs a hefty $297 per month.
That’s a lot more than you’re gonna pay for Infusionsoft – but it also supports up to 10,000 contacts, rather than basic 500 managed by Infusionsoft.
Chances are you’d be spending a lot more if you needed to upgrade your contacts to the same level with Keap.
The great thing about Ontraport is that you pretty much get access to all of the features you could need – no matter which package you choose.
The main difference between tiers is that the Pro and Team options come with set-up services and extra support included.
You can also add extra features onto Ontraport, like the ability to add extra email and contact capacity for $99 per 100,000 people.
Other “extras” include up to 100,000 extra email messages per month for $99, or $47 for every extra user you want to add.
The pricing of Infusionsoft by Keap is one of the biggest changes the company made with its rebrand, and it means it loses this round.
While Ontraport seems more expensive at first, you get a lot more for your money – particularly when it comes to contact management and storage.
Ontraport vs Infusionsoft: Automation
Let’s move on from pricing for a bit to take a look at another crucial consideration: automation.
Chances are that the main reason you’re investing in an email marketing tool is to take some of the work off your shoulders when it comes to connecting with customers.
Infusionsoft by Keap offers a very similar experience to the one you’ll be used to if you’ve ever used Infusionsoft before. The main change is that the UI now has navigation on the left-hand side of the page, rather than at the top.
When it comes to building emails, everything is quite straightforward.
Keap has kept the Infusionsoft drag-and-drop builder for template editing and marketing funnel creation.
It’s not the prettiest tool on the market, but it is very easy to use.
There are plenty of automation rules to choose from, and you can also pick from a series of “goals” that you want to lead your customers too, like submitting a web form or completing a task.
Infusionsoft by Keap also allows you to build a range of similar sequences that lead to the same goal if you’re concerned that your audience members might take their own unique “path to purchase.”
The campaign builder is great for cutting down some of the manual processes involved in developing drip strategies for your email list.
You can even follow up on things like repeat purchases and abandoned carts too.
The biggest issue is that there’s a bit of a learning curve here for beginners.
You might not understand how the whole if-this-then-that functionality works if you’re just getting started. However, that’s what the onboarding expense when you first purchase your software is for.
The Infusionsoft by Keap team will guide you through how to use your newest tool.
Ontraport is also pretty effective when it comes to setting up and managing autoresponder features.
The campaign builder is probably the core feature of Ontraport and the place where you’ll be spending most of your time when you’ve finished designing your landing pages and forms.
Everything is designed to be super visual so that you won’t have a problem working through your funnels.
Plus, you can choose from a range of pre-made templates to get started if you’re not sure exactly what you want to do with your autoresponders to begin with.
I actually found the template campaigns to be super helpful with getting started.
They all come with a checklist that will help you to make sure that you’ve set things up properly before you launch your campaign.
What’s more, if you’re working as part of a team, Ontraport allows you to collaborate with your colleagues by giving you the option to share workflows with other users too.
If you build a template that’s extra useful, you can also place a price tag on it and sell it to other Ontraport users as part of the community.
One place where Ontraport stands out is in the ability to automate sequences across multiple marketing channels, including social media platforms and SMS. You’re not just limited to responding to actions and triggers with emails.
Each template also comes with configurable goal tracking features which are designed to keep moving your customers along the pipeline to purchase whenever they perform a crucial action like visiting a landing page or clicking on a link.
This makes Ontraport a much more impressive choice in terms of automation than Infusionsoft by Keap at this stage.
The wealth of options really does make it easier for anyone (Even a beginner) to build laser-focused campaigns. However, Infusionsoft provides a cleaner interface and plenty of support to get you started.
Infusionsoft is a more attractive option for autoresponders, with a clean and consistent interface that’s easy to follow.
Additionally, the extra support from the Keap team goes a long way.
Ontraport vs Infusionsoft: Segmentation and CRM
No two customer segments are the same.
Your audience members don’t want to feel like they’re just another number on your list. They want to be treated like the special snowflakes that they are. This means that you’re going to need some pretty advanced segmentation features.
Both Infusionsoft and Ontraport are designed to give you excellent opportunities for contact management.
They each feature “tags” which you can use to categorize your contacts and assign properties to members in your CRM.
Infusionsoft by Keap allows you to organize your tags however you like. For instance, you can use tags to determine whether someone should be part of a VIP list based on what they’ve “opted-in” for in the past.
Additionally, adding information to contacts can be as advanced as you like. There’s plenty of options to fill out a full page of details for each customer.
Infusionsoft by Keap also gives users the opportunity to score every lead.
This can make it simpler for you to create quick and easy lists of people that you want to target with specific email messages.
For instance, you could send special deals to people most likely to convert and make a purchase.
Infusionsoft by Keap also ensures that you can add details for multi-channel marketing to your campaigns with phone numbers and social media details.
Plus, you can keep a complete history of all the quotes or messages you’ve sent to each user.
When you’re on your dashboard, you can also add a segment to your home page that allows you to track how many audience members you’re reaching out to at any time.
Keap makes contact management super immersive, with the option to tie in Gmail and Outlook inboxes, and smart forms that collect lead information for each of your campaigns.
Ontraport also offers excellent segmentation and contact management via a built-in CRM system.
Your CRM is where you manage things like email addresses, contact purchase history, landing page interactions, and more.
The data that you collect works hand-in-hand with the automation suite from Ontraport so you can create more personalized customer journeys.
Adding new contacts is easy peasy, with the option to fill out as much detail as you like.
For instance, you can include details about a person’s transactions, phone calls you’ve had with a client, SMS messages sent, and even if they confirmed their link to you with a double opt-in.
Ontraport also gives you the option to add notes and specific tasks for sales employees to follow up on to each contact.
That’s pretty impressive – and way more immersive than the experience you’d get from most software.
Additionally, you can also track which coupons you’ve sent to customers.
Ontraport makes it easy to find and merge duplicate contacts, so you’re not wasting your list limits, and you can add contacts to Facebook custom audiences for social media marketing.
Groups are based on fields in your contact records and tags, so you get more in-depth segments.
Additionally, the details on your contacts are dynamic. That means that they’ll update automatically when a connection qualifies to be a member of a group or no longer qualifies.
Ontraport is excellent at managing complicated tag scenarios. You’ll be able to handle dozens or even hundreds of tags at once.
Plus, with the Ontraport CRM, you can view all of your contacts in a list, or look at people card-by-card.
If you go for the card option for contact management, you can tailor your dashboard to show exactly what kind of information you need at any given time.
You’ll also be able to easily drag and drop people into the right segment based on their actions.
Honestly, their contact management system is one of the richest I’ve ever seen, and it seems to be perfect for creating some truly unique and customized journeys.
Ontraport vs Infusionsoft: Email Marketing and Ecommerce
Now that you’ve finished organizing your contacts, it’s time to make sure your marketing campaigns really stand out.
This means that you’re going to need some stunning email templates.
One annoying thing about Infusionsoft straight off the bat is that email newsletters are called “Broadcasts,” which might be confusing at first.
Once you click on the Broadcast tab, you’ll have a handful of templates to choose from.
There’s not a huge number here – like you’d get from Hubspot, but most of them seem relatively clean and modern.
On the plus side, the reliable email template editing tool from Infusionsoft means it’s pretty easy to spruce up your emails however you like.
You can create your templates from scratch too – using blocks of content that you drag and drop into a chosen environment.
The whole process is very straightforward and intuitive, and you’ll also be able to preview what your content is going to look like at the click of a button too.
Ontraport boasts a very similar range of template features.
Setting up an email sequence, as we’ve seen above, is very straightforward – in fact, it’s impressive enough that even a newbie should be able to manage it.
What’s more, creating beautiful and mobile responsive email templates is a breeze too.
You’ll have the option to choose between “Simple Mail,” “OntraMail” and “Raw HTML.” If you want the prettiest templates, I’d recommend clicking on OntraMail.
The templates available look very professionally designed, and like with the autoresponder funnels, if you create your own and you love it, you can always share it with the rest of community either for free or for a price.
There’s also plenty of videos, images, buttons, and more that are intended to make your emails more visually appealing for your target audience.
All the while, your private IP address from Ontraport makes sure that your beautiful emails are backed up by a spotless mailing rep.
Ontraport uses a similar block-based editor to the one offered by Infusionsoft when it comes to creating sign-up forms, emails, and landing pages.
You’ll be able to start-from-scratch, or simply change the features of your chosen templates to suit your needs.
The whole thing felt really straightforward.
There are countdown timers for those FOMO-themed emails, and unique CTA buttons, coupon offers, buttons, and more. Honestly, it’s hard to find anything to complain about.
Plus you can send test emails, check out how your content looks on mobile and more.
I personally didn’t think that the editor was as attractive as the one from Infusionsoft, but when it comes to features and functionality, Ontraport may be a little bit better.
You can add everything from videos and images to hosted email links, testimonials, and more to your emails.
Ontraport vs Infusionsoft: A/B Testing and Analytics
As fantastic as automation and segmentation tools might be – there’s something else you’ll need to make sure you’re getting the most out of your email ROI.
Reporting and analytics tools are how you optimize your messages and campaigns over time.
Practice makes perfect, after all.
Infusionsoft by Keap is pretty impressive when it comes to letting you visualize your data in easy-to-understand chunks.
When you click on your “Reports” tab, you’ll see a bunch of things you can look at like:
I particularly enjoyed the email engagement tracker tool.
I don’t know about you, but it helps me to know if the messages I’m sending are resonating with my target audience or not – and engagement is a good way to do that.
To check on the performance of your individual emails, you need to go into your Campaign page and do a deep-dive into what’s going on there.
It’s a little bit complicated – but you do eventually get used to the new Keap experience.
Plus, you end up with a highly compelling solution for analytics and reports. You can even create full insight pages for your stakeholders if you want to.
Ontraport is way more impressive when it comes to A/B testing.
Not only is the feature included in the standard plan, but you can also split test very creatively, at virtually any depth.
Ontraport lets you split test everything from your emails and forms to your landing pages, retargeting ads, and SMS messages.
For landing pages, all you need to do is toggle the split test button and edit the duplicate page with your desired variations.
If you want to split test your automated sequence, you can add a “split” element to your campaign and choose if you wish to route a specific percentage to each option.
As your tests run, the app will automatically track things like click-through rates, conversions, and response rates on your behalf.
Speaking of tracking results, Ontraport offers other options for reporting too.
The reports are located under the “Sales” tab in your UI. You can look at things like subscriptions, customer value, open orders, and more.
Plus, there’s the option to deep-dive into the performance of each individual email campaign if you want.
In your messages collection, you’ll find a list view where you can see insights into opens, opt-outs, clicks, and more on multiple emails at the same time. You can also group and sort your emails accordingly based on your insights.
There’s also a “Performance Mode” option which shows you an overlay of data directly on your campaign map, highlighting things like engagement metrics based on the goals you want to track.
The reporting on Ontraport is very immersive, but it’s also pretty complicated – particularly for a beginner.
You’re going to need to watch some videos and do some experimenting to figure out how everything works.
Tracking things like repeat buyers and adding UTM codes to your emails is simple enough, but honestly, it’s going to be pretty overwhelming for anyone to do this when they’re just getting started with Ontraport.
I’d prefer some clearer training on how to leverage the reports – particularly in the email marketing section of Ontraport.
One benefit is that Ontraport does come with predictive data that allows you to confidently determine what you want to do next with your campaigns.
Ontraport offers very comprehensive A/B testing and analytics – but they’re just not easy enough to use. That’s why I’d give Infusionsoft the win here, with the option to track many different metrics with ease.
Ontraport vs Infusionsoft: Usability
It’s easy to forget just how important usability is.
We all get distracted by shiny features and email marketing promises. However, the truth is that if you can’t use the software that’s available to you, then you’re not going to be able to get the most out of it.
Infusionsoft by Keap has a really gorgeous UI since its update. It’s far more simple and straightforward than the one that Infusionsoft used to have.
The navigation on the left-hand side of your page means that you’re not going to get overwhelmed with tons of options at the top of your screen.
For instance, this is what Infusionsoft looked like before:
Another great feature is that Infusionsoft users can customize their UI according to their individual needs.
You can remove different sections and widgets if they’re not relevant to your campaigns, and you can check on the tasks you need to do each day in your home page too.
Ultimately, Infusionsoft by Keap is great for keeping track of your day-to-day sales and marketing activities.
There are also mobile apps available for Android and iOS, although their functionality isn’t exactly perfect at this stage.
Ontraport also does its best to give you a simple experience.
There’s the option to migrate your data straight into the Ontraport dashboard automatically, which is excellent for helping you to get started.
Additionally, the Ontraport home page is relatively simple, although I personally didn’t find it very attractive.
The whole experience seems pretty basic and old-fashioned when compared to something like Infusionsoft by Keap.
Another major issue? If you end up clicking through to a campaign or making a new landing page for your marketing efforts, you can’t just click back on the homepage when you’re done.
It seems as though you have to click back through the whole dashboard, which is super clunky and annoying.
You can’t even check out the full dashboard experience on your free trial, as you need to have a paid version of Ontraport to get started.
On the plus side, when you do upgrade to a premium version of Ontraport, you get the option to customize your view basically any way you like.
Additionally, Ontraport offers excellent contextual help on virtually every page of the platform.
This is particularly useful when you consider how complex Ontraport can be for beginners.
If you want to find out more about any page, you can click on the info icon at the bottom right of the page, and you’ll get a little help window, complete with links to relevant videos and articles.
Ontraport tries to be user-friendly, but it’s nowhere near as simple to use as Infusionsoft by Keap.
The whole experience offered by Infusionsoft is way more straightforward – particularly after the UI update this year.
Ontraport vs Infusionsoft: Customer Support
We all need a little help sometimes.
Before you decide on your new email marketing tool, it’s worth checking out what kind of customer support you can get.
Infusionsoft by Keap comes with plenty of support options to choose from, including knowledge base articles, videos, blogs, and other ways to help yourself on the Help Center.
You can also get one-on-one support from the team by contacting one of the call centers in the USA, UK, Australia, or Canada.
If you have a paid account, then you can also connect to instant chat within your Infusionsoft dashboard.
Infusionsoft also has a robust community full of people who are willing to answer your questions if you get stuck.
Ontraport also has a pretty impressive approach to customer support.
There’s live chat support which is actively encouraged as you work through the user interface, and you’ll receive answers to your questions almost instantly – at least based on my experience.
Phone support is also available seven days a week, and there’s a generous selection of self-help options available too, including knowledge base articles and a Facebook user group.
For those who need extra assistance, there’s training available from “Ontraport Education” where you can earn certificates and learn from leading experts.
If you’re new to Ontraport, you can also take advantage of free video sessions with a member of the Ontraport client success team. The group will help you to migrate from previous platforms and get your account fully set-up.
There are also regular training sessions like the “Marketing Automation Masterclass” video series.
Unlike many email marketing tools, Ontraport also hosts yearly user conferences and offers the option to “find an expert” who can run your entire email marketing solution for you if you want some extra professional help. The possibilities are endless.
The wide range of support options available from Ontraport makes it challenging to beat in terms of customer service.
Ontraport vs Infusionsoft: Which One Should You Choose?
If you’re looking for a solution that combines email marketing with CRM solutions and sales support, then Infusionsoft by Keap and Ontraport both have a lot to offer.
While Infusionsoft seems to focus on ease of use and accessibility, Ontraport is more about in-depth and immersive analytics, as well as advanced tools.
If you’re a smaller company that’s just getting started, or you’re looking for simplicity above all else, I’d recommend trying your free trial of Infusionsoft before you consider the more complex Ontraport.
Alternatively, if you’re looking for something more advanced, but without the same immersive UI as you’d get from Keap, then you can try Ontraport for free.
Use Ontraport if:
- You want highly advanced analytics
- You need high-value pricing
- An extensive CRM and customer management is crucial
- You want state-of-the-art customer service
Use Infusionsoft if:
- You need high-level email templates
- You want a state-of-the-art campaign builder
- You’re looking for a clean UI and ease-of-use
- You have limited contacts to reach
