How To Use The Facebook Open Graph Meta Tags To Control Your Site’s Sharing Experience (No Code Needed)

Have you ever tried to share your content (or someone elses’s) on Facebook and realised the link looked like SHIT there ?

I have. And that prevented me from sharing a bunch of cool stuff and I’m sure a bunch of cool stuff I produced didn’t get shared for that reason.

Plus, when your snippets look boring and/or broken, you’ll get almost no traffic from these shares because they will get DESTROYED by the Buzzfeed and co swarming our Facebook feeds in terms of CTR.

This has to end. Therefore this week, following miss Jennita’s Whiteboard friday of last week, I decided to investigate social media snippets optimisation for WordPress.

I wanted to control everything. From the Image to the headline and description.

Without further teasing. Here’s the tutorial:

Why you should optimise your Facebook sharing experience

  • It increases the chances of people sharing (and re sharing) your content
  • It improves the clickthrough rate on shared items
  • Improved clickthrough rate improves shared items visibility
  • Increased referral traffic from Facebook

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial, the posts I’ve optimised using this technique so far are receiving roughly double the amount of traffic from Facebook share than they used to before.

  1. Yep, Yoast can do that. Title, Picture and description for Facebook and Twitter.

I think you mentioned it in one of your podcasts that you should use different titles in Facebook than on WordPress.
It totally make sense. People are different with search intent, and would rarely try to search for some more clickbait article.
Thanks for the tipp, I did that with my newest article. :)
    Cheers,

  2. Actually, Yoast SEO has now become much stronger than before, so the plugin itself is enough to modify Open Graph info. Talk about technology!

  3. Hi Gael,

I would like to follow the steps as you have explained.

The problem is I have been using All in one SEO on my site. Is it ok to change it to Yoast and if so, kindly let me know what steps I should take to switch from one to the other.

I am not technical at all so a bit nervous about making the change in case things go wrong.

    Thanks

    Kas

    1. Hey Kas,

Actually Yoast has an all in one SEO import function in the import/export section. Just install Yoast, import the data from all in one and cut all in one and you should be fine. Yoast is way better anyway ;).

  4. Hey Jeff,

    Thanks for dropping by,

For the resize yeah there are many reasons why Facebook will resize or not and this is based on one’s individual feed. Some people may see the same story shrunk or full sized depending on your edge rank and the popularity of the story I guess.

I’ll be playing more with it this week and update the post if there’s any interesting findings.

  5. Great post, Gael. Well done tutorial and something I definitely needed to improve.

I noticed when you posted to facebook the image resized (or was two different sizes – one full news feed width and the other as a thumbnail). Since I have a much higher clickthrough rate when the image is full size, is there a way to control this via the plugins? Or, does the opengraph always scale down like this (I think this might be the case).

    Thanks again!
