SEMRush was a bit of a roller coaster.
First, it hit hard as a good way to reverse-engineer your competition and find good keyword ideas.
But now it seems to be back on track.
What can you do with SEMRush?
You can use it to:
- Do competitor analysis
- Find the right keywords to rank
- Augment your paid advertising campaigns
- Analyze other pages on the SE ranking
- Get insights on your social media presence
And many other things.
But, it’s not a perfect tool.
Some people opt for Moz Pro, and we’re leaning towards Ahrefs as a general alternative.
And that’s because of a cumbersome interface, lacking tools here and there and a generally better experience with other SEMRush alternatives.
But everybody’s got different needs, so let’s take everything you can do in SEMRush and see what’s the better alternative.
10 Best SEMRush Alternatives
- Google Ads
- Long Tail Pro
- Moz Pro
- Screaming Frog
Best Overall SEMRush Alternative: Ahrefs
We did give it away, but the best SEMRush alternative overall is Ahrefs.
When compared to SEMRush, Ahrefs is a clear winner.
They have more or less the same capabilities (minus the SMM and advertising features of SEMRush).
But Ahrefs takes the cake with a better interface, more accurate search volume data, better search engine results page analysis and one of the best keyword research tools on the market.
Sure, if you only do a bit of SEO (which, might we argue, is never enough SEO) and don’t care all that much about search volume metrics or finding the best keywords, SEMRush seems like an easy winner.
After all, it does the same things Ahrefs does, and a bit more.
If you’re a marketer, that’s true in some cases.
But for most people, Ahrefs is a better choice thanks to all the benefits outlined above.
Best SEMRush Free Alternative: Ubersuggest
When you think about what an all-in-one SEO tool should do, it’s hard to find a free alternative.
And you can bootstrap some improvised options, like a combination of Google Analytics, The Search Console, The Keyword Planner and other tools like that.
Moreover, SEMRush has a free trial, so you can check the tool out and see if it’s right for you.
Plus, if you only need a digital marketing tool for a little bit of research, you don’t really need a free alternative to SEMRush – you can just use the free trial.
But if you want a long-term option, try Ubersuggest.
Now don’t go in expecting an all-in-one experience.
Ubersuggest is not on par with other SEO tools when it comes to the number of features.
But it does a few things right:
- Keyword Research
- Rank Tracking
- SERP Analysis
- Backlink profile analysis
And for a free option (Yeah, they do have a completely free version of the tool) it’s not bad.
For most small websites, or blogs getting started, Ubersuggest is more than enough.
Plus, compared to SEMRush, it has a much prettier interface.
Even if you do want to upgrade and try their paid plans, it will only cost you $10 a month.
So definitely give it a shot, and read our Ubersuggest review if you want to find out more.
Best Alternative On A Budget: SERPStat
Raven Tools has a decent price.
Heck, even Ubersuggest could be an SEMRush alternative for companies on a budget. Their tools are good to have you covered in most cases.
But if you want the full SEO tool experience, you’ll need to go for SERPStat.
SERPStat is not a veteran in the scene like the SEO Powersuite or Moz Pro.
And it can fall behind big names like Ahrefs or SEMRush. For example, their keyword research tool is not as advanced.
In general, their research tools won’t go as in-depth as SEMRush.
But it has a better user experience when compared to SEMRush.
And while you have to pay $99.95 each month to use SEMRush, you’ll only pay $69 per month for a SERPStat subscription.
So it’s a decent alternative to SEMRush, as long as you don’t expect the same advanced features and complex dashboards. If that sounds like what you need, read our SERPStat review.
Best Alternative For Beginners: Mangools
The Mangools Suite is by far the best SEMRush alternative for beginners.
It’s probably the best SEO alternative for beginners when compared to any tool.
You can use their suite for:
- Backlink Analysis
- Website Analysis
- Keyword Research
- SERP Analysis
- Rank Tracking
And it’s all packaged in a digestible interface.
You won’t struggle to find which tool does what.
And you won’t have an over cluttered screen. The interface is smooth, beautiful and they go to any length to accommodate new users.
Even without a lot of experience, you can still get decent keyword recommendations and a quick overview of the search engine results page.
But that’s not to mean it’s a weak tool.
You actually have a lot of features at your disposal to find the best keywords to rank for, and quickly analyze search engine results pages.
So it’s not one of the light SEO tools.
It even does a lot of things better when compared to SEMRush – like the SERP Checker.
If you want to find out more (and get some tips on how to use their suite) read our KWFinder review.
Best Advertising Alternative: Google Ads
SEMRush has a lot of features for paid advertising.
And in a lot of cases, that’s helpful, especially if you have an ecommerce website.
But if you don’t care all that much about SEO, doing a site audit, tapping into a fat search volume organically or finding great long-tail keywords…
You shouldn’t spend all that money on SEMRush each month.
In fact, our solution is pretty simple: Google Ads.
Google Ads lets you get way more insights into your paid advertising performance than SEMRush.
And in a lot of cases, the insights you could get from SEMRush are only available once you set-up an Ads campaign.
So cut the middle man, and focus on mastering Google Ads.
With some insights and a bit of focus on Google Analytics too, you don’t need the added cost of SEMRush.
Best Alternative For Keyword Research Only: Long Tail Pro
Long Tail Pro is a veteran among SEO tools, but that doesn’t mean it got ragged throughout the years.
The tool still packs a punch.
And if you’re renewing a SEMRush subscription each month just for the Keywords Overview, or the “magic tool”, you might be better off with a Long Tail Pro subscription.
Even if you make use of SEMRush’s other features, Long Tail Pro is still better at keyword research.
No, it doesn’t serve the same amount of data.
But it’s easier to navigate.
On top, they have strong algorithms that help you filter through the data and find long-tail phrases easily.
So it’s a strong alternative to SEMRush if you need a good way to do keyword research. Just read our Long Tail Pro review first to get the full picture.
Best Alternative For Competitor Analysis: Moz Pro
SEMRush used to be the go-to alternative for competitor analysis.
And it’s still got a lot of amazing features for tracking your competitors.
So we’re not sure if you should switch to this one right away…
But if you feel like you need something different to tackle your competitors, you should try Moz Pro.
The Domain and Page Authority metrics they feature are famous.
And besides the digital marketing tool itself, you can also use the Moz Bar for quick insights into competitors.
We can’t really say which one is the best alternative for spying on your competitors, but both are strong options, and both cost $99 each month for their basic plans.
So if you want to reverse engineer some keywords, find link building opportunities or just have a quick glance into your niche…
…And if you don’t really feel SEMRush is worth the price anymore, you can try Moz Pro.
Best Alternative For Social Media: Buzzsumo
SEMRush has a social media toolkit.
It’ll help you schedule posts and centralize SMM insights.
They even have a social media ad builder in the works.
But it’s not the best optimized platform. If you’re looking for a tool only focused on social media, try Social Sprout.
However, if you want a digital marketing tool with some SMM features, Buzzsumo is one of the best alternatives.
Besides social media, it can also help you brainstorm article ideas, track your performance and find influencers to help you promote your business.
Simply put: Buzzsumo is a digital marketing tool with an affinity for social platforms. That’s obvious from their branding and from many other stuff.
For example, when you track your competitors you get data on their back links, and social reach on equal standing.
So it could be a good choice for media agencies.
Or platforms that rely on viral content to bring in traffic.
Best Alternative For Link Data: Majestic
Ahrefs is a great tool, both for finding link building opportunities and for measuring link data.
So in and of itself, Ahrefs is a good choice for links and all related data.
But one of the best SEMRush alternatives for links and link building is Majestic.
Simply put – it’s a digital marketing tool focused on links.
Yeah, a lot of all-in-ones have backlink data capabilities, from Moz Pro to the SEO Powersuite.
But Majestic goes much deeper, covering your link data basics, and helping you get estimates for backlink evolution over time, analysis of what your competitors did on specific dates and a bunch of other important information sets.
If you feel like you’re lacking behind when it comes to links, it’s the best choice.
Best SEMRush Alternative For Site Audits: Screaming Frog
Most all-in-one tools have auditing capabilities.
SEMRush, Ahrefs, SERPStat and even Ubersuggest will help you with great site audits.
But if you want to take it a step further, try Screaming Frog.
The Screaming Frog SEO spider is one of the (if not the) best alternatives to SEMRush for auditing.
With all of its bells and whistles, SEMRush still can’t match this one.
Yeah, you might not get the same tools for search engine results page, keyword research or pay per click campaigns.
And Screaming Frog can seem like an unorthodox piece of desktop software in a browser-based world.
But you can get advanced details on your presence.
So if your backyard needs some mowing, Screaming Frog is on par with other SEMRush alternatives.
To Wrap It Up
Whether you want to find the best keywords, do a site audit, analyze the SERP or spy on your competitors, Ahrefs is a better SEO tool when compared to SEMRush.
But that doesn’t mean you should always go for Ahrefs.
Digital marketing is a large field, and there are alternatives to SEMRush in all niches of it.
We hope you found some of them here today.
